Project Nirmalya - निर्मल्या

“The earth will not continue to offer its harvest, except with faithful stewardship. We cannot say we love the land and then take steps to destroy it for use by future generations.” ― Pope John Paul II

Project Nirmalya

Our waste is our responsibility
Why we do it?

The menace of waste accumulation is plaguing Delhi. If you've ever been to the capital you might have mistaken the numerous landfills, piled with millions of tons of waste as mountains. A staggering 9000 metric tons of waste is dumped in the landfills on a daily basis releasing harmful greenhouse gases, detoriating quality of life of the underpreviliged living near the landfill. Understanding the severity of the situation, we have decided to take the onus upon ourselves and endeavour to eradicate this problem from the city.

What we do?

We have focussed on two schemes of solution. In the first scheme, we use decentralised technology enabled community composing models for large commercial and residential establishments to convert horticulture and other biodegradable waste into high quality manure. In the second scheme, we are working on an innovative home composting solution to facilitate effective waste segregation and disposal at source.

How we do it?

We use technology as a tool to develop efficient improvements over existing mesh composting solutions and deploy them in partnership with our partner establishments ( societies, schools etc.). We also organise awareness campaigns to transition a perspective change in our partners. Our partners take responsibility of managing their composting unit. Our home composting model is a Cause to Consumer initiative, involving direct sales of home composter units to individuals willing to actively participate in the change of the world.

Why are we different?

1. Extensive use of latest technology to improve quality yeild of the composting process 2. Extensive 2 year ground research to understand nuances in stakeholder behaviour 3. An all round cohesive team and a strong mentor base

Social Impact

Less waste disposal to landfill is a step towards elevate quality of life for people living in urban slums near landfills. The underpreviliged gardeners and waste collectors are empowered via a sense of mutual feeling pride in their work with us.

Enviornmental Impact

The waste degrading on landfills emit methane which is 24 times more contributory than carbon dioxide to global warming. Our solutions enable direct abatement of these methane emmissions. We also indirectly help in reducing waste transport emmisions to landfills and ground water quality deteroriation.

Economical Impact

We enable economical saving to our partner establishments as compost is generated in house. Our partner gardeners and waste collectors also earn an increased income via involvement in our venture.
